A very timely book for everyone! |
Marriage is a lifetime of commitment... and navigating the straits of this remarkable union can be daunting. Being married for 24 years doesn't make my marriage any easier. In fact, it takes as much work as when my husband and I were starting out. Sometimes, it's easier to give up than make the extra effort to make any relationship work. In today's world where everything changes, I can appreciate how Shakespeare penned love in his Sonnet 116:
"Let me not to the marriage of true minds
Admit impediments. Love is not love
Which alters when it alteration finds,
Or bends with the remover to remove:
O no; it is an ever-fixed mark,
That looks on tempests, and is never shaken..."
Oh, my. When he says it like that, I can't help but be more determined to improve on my marriage. After all, if we take the extra effort to tone our bodies, boost our careers or upgrade our lifestyles, shouldn't marriage be our top priority?

Nuggets of Wisdom I Gained
The book aptly started with author and practical marriage expert Dr. Gary Chapman of The 5 Love Language series (which, you must read, too!). Learning the love language of our spouses is important, because as Dr. Chapman explained, "Love stimulates love." Well, I thought I knew it all, but obviously, I still need a lot of improvement in this department!
I also appreciated the advices of the other experts especially the ones where it says, "Don't be afraid to be the one who loves the most." There were a lot of practical tips given that are so easy to do and are guaranteed to make you more connected to your mate. It makes you think, "Why didn't I think of that?"

Marriage: Union of two good forgivers |
God designed marriage to last and families to stay together. Sadly, this isn't the case today. As more couples head for divorce and disillusionment, it makes me wonder the future of marriage and our children. But in the midst of uncertainty, I also believe that if God is the center of any marriage, this union is built to last.
